Knee injuries are common, especially when taking part in sport. Knee joint pain can be related to overuse where small stresses are repeated a large number of times without allowing adequate recovery, for example running too much too soon, or excessive jumping. Or injuries can be acute where the injury is caused by an impact or twisting such as an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Knee injuries can range from mild to severe. While direct blows to the knee will occur, the knee is more susceptible to twisting or stretching injuries, taking the joint through a greater range of motion than it can tolerate.

Because of its complex structure and weight-bearing capacity, the knee is the most commonly injured joint. Sports massage is particularly valuable in the treatment of many knee injuries.
