We started this comprehensive distance learning course in 1990. Since then, over 3000 students have taken this course. It is used by a large number of colleges as part of their main teaching or as a pre-entry requirement for their study. The course is now in its seventh edition, and is extensively revised and updated.

The course provides a supporting knowledge of orthodox medicine to give alternative practitioners a sound understanding of the functioning and malfunctioning of the human body. This essential learning will help with the assessment and treatment of patients, and in decision making in referring patients to other practitioners.

The course is aimed at students of the alternative therapies who have little background in the life sciences or have not studied biology for a number of years. No previous knowledge of biology is required.

The course is carried out by home study, and takes about 150 - 200 hours to complete. There is no strict timetable for the completion of the course - you work through the learning materials at your own pace.

We send you the printed course manual, which contains 5 course units of 25 - 40 pages each plus the two essential textbooks for the course.

Each unit contains explanatory text, reading references for the two textbooks that accompany the course, short self-assessment questions and longer assignments.
You will also be given contact details for your tutor, if you have purchased the course with tutor marking.

Rigorous external assessment is provided through completion of the comprehensive assignments sets, with high standards of tutor marking. The course certification is equivalent to a UK vocational 'A' level or NVQ Level 3 and will provide you with a solid foundation should you wish to undertake further study.

There are 4 - 6 assignments at the end of each unit that you send to your tutor by post or e-mail. These are assessed and returned to you.

To complete the course, you have to attain a passing grade in each of the assignments. You will then be awarded Alternative Training's Certificate.

Please note: you will only be assigned a tutor, be able to send work for assessment and receive a certificate on completion of the course if you purchase it with tutor marking. If you purchase the course without tutor marking, it is possible to upgrade it to include the services of a tutor later.
