What we notice around us each day are physical things, such as people, the chair we sit on, the television set, clothes, flowers, birds, everything in our surroundings. This is our concept of things that exist -­ what we can actually see and touch.

But besides our physical body and physical experience, there is a subtle, invisible energy system which permeates everything that exists. In the western world, it is called life-force energy, in India prana, in China chi or qi, in Japan ki, from which the name Reiki was formed.  This energy keeps us alive, fuels our nervous and endocrine system and maintains our health. The quality of the energy is therefore important. Unhealthy energy means ill health and things going wrong. Healthy energy means good health and things working well.

The way this energy flows around us and through us determines our health, energy levels, motivation, moods and more. It can make us feel on top of the world or down in the dumps. It can affect our relationships, the quality of our life and our opportunities. It can affect us positively or negatively, but only if we allow it to, because we have the power to control and manipulate this energy ourselves.
