So, what exactly is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy, treating the whole person, bringing the body back into its natural state of balance and well-being.  Living in the 21st century can be very stressful for our bodies, even if we think we are coping well with modern life, we are all very good at hiding phobias and emotions which are stored away as tension in the muscles, and knots in the deepest recesses of the digestive system.

Reflexology is a brilliant tool for:

  • Discovering nooks and crannies
  • Easing tensions
  • Deflating nightmares
  • Stretching muscles
  • Easing the aches and pains that we have tolerated for so long.

Reflexology stimulates the circulation of blood, lymph and strengthens the nervous system. It invigorates all organs, thus bringing about a state of balance and releasing any stored toxins into the body for excretion in the usual way.  All this is done without you having to move a muscle - no effort is required, just deep relaxation

What are the Origins of Reflexology?

The origins of Reflexology are lost in the mists of time; links with acupressure, acupuncture, the meridians and energy medicine are quite likely, but there is no concrete evidence for this.

It is told that a drawing in an Egyptian tomb, dating back to 2330 BC, is showing two people holding another persons foot, in a very similar manner to how treatments are performed today.  There is said to be evidence that foot massage has been used for health and healing for many centuries all over the world.

Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat specialist rediscovered a form of reflexology, and in 1917 he published a therapy book.  From this Mrs Eunice Ingham refined Dr. Fitzgerald's procedures and it is she who is credited with the invention of the finger and thumb method of massaging the feet and also of making a map of the feet to reflect the whole of the body.

How will it affect me - are there any side effects to worry about?

This therapy can bring about a wonderful sense of relaxation and well being, although when the body systems are weak with self-neglect, stress and tension, then the massage of the feet can be quite painful.  On the areas where problems gather, like the neck reflex or the adrenal gland reflex, uncomfortable sensations may be felt like sharp pinpricks, or a bruised feeling.  This is nothing to worry about for it gives an indication to the therapist where problem areas or potential problem areas are.  With gentle and thorough massage the tension is eased, bringing about that state of balance our body craves.

Unexpected and delightful side effects

Some unusual side effects that have been noticed is the urge to De-clutter!

  • De-clutter the house, the loft and garden
  • De-clutter relationships - relationships that have been barely tolerated for years are pushed aside
  • De-clutter the body -lose weight, throw away clothes that no longer fit the new energy that is coming in
  • De-clutter jobs that no longer work - work less hours - work more hours - go for that promotion - become self-employed - change direction entirely

In other words, not only does reflexology bring benefits of brimming health and well-being it also benefits the whole of the rest of your life, pointing you in the direction of your fullest potential.
