Sometimes you may find it difficult to make various decisions in life or you may find it difficult to concentrate on a given task. Although most people tend to assume this could be as a result of a stressful day at work or just fatigue, there are various simple tests you need to do in order to ensure everything is fine. Neuropsychological testing is known to be one of the best ways that you can ascertain everything is okay mentally.

Neuropsychological testing determines the health of your brain by assessing how it affects your thinking, behavior, and skills. These are tests usually administered in the doctor’s office with a paper and pen, using a computer, or being asked to answer questions orally.

What the tests contain

Neuropsychological testing helps your doctor to know how well you can concentrate on various things and it also determines your attention span. Some of the other areas that are included in psychological testing are as follows:

  • Your concetration and attention span
  • Your verbal ability
  • Your decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Your memory
  • Your ability to understand, learn, think and remember things
  • Your sensory-motor function in terms of coordination, walking, perception, etc.
  • How well you can take in what you read and what you see.

The tests given

There are various tests that you will be given. Some of these tests include

  1. Memory test:  This is where you are given a list of numbers, words or sentences to repeat and then you will be asked some questions to see how well you can remember.
  2. Cognition test:  This is where you are given two items or more and then you will be asked to explain how the given items are similar or how they relate to each other.
  3. Sensory-Motor test: This is where you are given various activities such as using your hand to insert pegs into a pegboard and then you will do the same with your other hand.
  4. Verbal communication tests: This is where you will be asked to give the name of the pointed item as the doctor will be pointing to it, or you can also be given a random letter of the alphabet and you will be asked to give a list of words that begin with that letter.

When do you need to take the test?

Neuropsychological testing can be done when you notice some change in your memory or your thinking. The various tests adminstered help the doctor to determine whether your problems may be caused by some conditions such as brain injury, stroke, emotional disorders such as anxiety or depression, normal brain changes associated with getting older or diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Your health is very important, and that is why when you notice changes in your thinking, skills, and behaviors you need to be checked before it becomes worse. Neuropsychological evaluations help doctors determine whether you are having problems, what may be leading to those problems, and how to minimize those problems with treatment options.
