4 Ways to Prepare for Your First CAT Scan

When it comes to medical tests like CAT scans, most people are naturally nervous. Much like an X-ray or MRI, a CAT scan produces a computer-generated image of a person's brain, intestines, or other areas of the body requiring specialized attention. However, because this test is so complex, patients need to prepare for the test by doing several different things.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Prior to taking a CAT scan, most patients will be instructed to wear clothing that is very loose-fitting as well as comfortable. In some cases, the person may be asked to change out of their clothes and instead wear a hospital gown. However, if the patient's clothing will not interfere with the test itself, they can usually wear what they wore to the hospital.

No Metal Objects

Often, one of the biggest hindrances to a CAT scan involves patients and metal objects. Because metal objects can hinder the scan's images, technicians will instruct patients to either remove the objects or leave them at home if possible. Some of the most common objects which cause CAT scan problems include:

·         jewelry

·         hearing aids

·         dentures

·         hairpins

·         eyeglasses

Along with these items, any other removable dental work also needs to be removed prior to the beginning of the test. Otherwise, the highly-sensitive imaging equipment may also be damaged. In many cases this can involve a faulty circuit board, which companies like Streamline Circuits can repair or replace depending on the type of machine and damaged sustained.

No Eating or Drinking

If the scan will be involving the digestive tract, intestines, or other parts of the abdomen, the patient may need to refrain from eating or drinking for up to eight hours prior to the scan. In most cases, this is done if a contrast material is to be ingested in order to provide better images for the doctor.

Current Medications

When a patient arrives for the CAT scan, they should have with them an updated list of their current medications, including all prescriptions, over-the-counter medication and any vitamins or other supplements. By having this information, doctors can limit the risk of any adverse or unusual effects occurring during the procedure.

While no one truly enjoys the process of a CAT scan, this medical method is responsible for saving thousands of lives throughout its time. So while it may be a bit inconvenient and uncomfortable, it can potentially be a lifesaver as well. Remember to keep calm and lie still during the process in order to avoid any complications or multiple attempts.
