Dealing with chronic pain mean that you have to make plenty of sacrifices to live even a semblance of a normal life. Those who don’t deal with this might not realize how much of a toll it can take on you. While you can’t just wish chronic pain away, you can learn to better deal with it. Here are five steps to taking control of your life amidst chronic pain.
Get Regular Medical Attention
With chronic pain, you’ll be making regular medical appointments. Even if you aren’t having any flare-ups, you should still stick to your appointments. Your doctors can help see what areas of your body need the most attention. Look for a medical center that has a pain managementdepartment. Schedule an appointment and see if you find a doctor who you like and trust.
Exercise When Possible
You might not be able to run a marathon or lift heavy weights, but you can do some exercise with chronic pain. Speak to your doctor about any physical exercises that would work with your pain. They might recommend stretches or certain yoga practices. It’s important to not strain yourself and to stop when you feel any sort of pain.
Take Your Medication
The difference between excruciating and manageable pain can be linked to medication. If you’re prescribed a certain medication, take it as needed. You should be aware of any side effects and let your doctor know immediately if it gives you any problems.
Reduce Stressors
Outside factors might not cause chronic pain, but they can certainly exacerbate them. When you have to go to work, run errands, bring kids to and from school, and make dinner, you’re likely to feel more stressed and in more pain. Remember that you can reduce stress significantly through outside help. Hire a housekeeper or nanny to help with certain obligations. If you can’t afford this, consider asking your spouse and kids to pitch in more.
Get Support
Chronic pain can make you feel like you’re forced to suffer alone. However, there are support groupsthat you can join. These bring together people in your predicament. When you share stories with one another, you can better understand how to cope with chronic pain.
No one but you knows the extent of your chronic pain. Do not allow anyone to try to undermine what you’re going through. Even if your pain isn’t outwardly visible, it’s still very much true. With these tips, you can help better deal with chronic pain.
