Losing weight is rewarding, but there can also be some hidden consequences. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome these drawbacks and enjoy the full rewards of losing weight. Here are four consequences of losing weight that you might not have known.

The Need for New Shoes

In addition to buying new clothes to fit your slimmer body, you’ll probably need new shoes as well. Shape.com points out that you’ll lose fat in your feet along with other parts of your body when you shed pounds. The loss of weight might cause your heels to slip out of your old shoes. Buying some new zip-up boots will work great in supporting your slimmer calves and providing a tighter fit. You’ll also have the freedom to buy some high heels, which will be easier to wear with less weight.

Possible Bone Loss

People generally experience some bone loss when losing weight. The only time when it’s usually a big problem is when weight is lost in an unhealthy manner. It could also be a concern if you already suffer from a bone condition such as osteoporosis. If you’re worried about bone loss, you can take calcium and vitamin D supplements to try to combat the problem. Talking to your doctor and taking additional medications to prevent excessive bone loss may also be helpful.

Loose Skin

Saggy skin is often left behind after a dramatic weight loss. Doing strength training exercises to build muscle can fill out some of these areas of loose skin. Seeing a cosmetic surgeon who knows how to remove excess skin safely is another option. If you have saggy skin around your stomach, a tummy tuck can tighten the area with natural-looking results. Cosmetic procedures can also remove hanging skin from the arms, neck and buttocks.

Emotional Problems May Still Exist

If you have feelings of self-doubt, depression and anxiety while being overweight, these problems won’t simply vanish overnight once you’ve shed the pounds. Realizing this from the beginning of your weight-loss journey may prevent you from feeling discouraged once you’ve reached your target weight. To combat these emotional problems, you should consider seeing a counselor or another mental health professional. It’s also good to talk with friends and family members who can offer additional support. Emotional eating will definitely need to be resolved if you want to keep the pounds off for good.

The consequences that come along with losing weight are easy to overcome with the right tools. By maintaining a realistic mindset, you’ll have less difficulty dealing with these drawbacks.
