There are all sorts of things that could exist in your home that may be causing you to experience health problems. This could include the items that you bring into your home or even things that you already have within your home. Here are some of the environmental factors that you should take under advisement when it comes to making your home a little healthier.
Household Chemicals
Not all household cleaners are created equal. Some are more noxious in nature and could be leaving behind residue that can be damaging to your health. You can develop sensitivities to these types of products over time. You might even experience an increase in breathing or lung problems. Try to find cleaners that are greener and less damaging to the environment. You may even want to make your own products from items such as vinegar and baking soda.
Mold Concerns
Black mold can develop in any type of household, but especially in more humid areas that hold more moisture. It may even be hiding within your walls without your knowledge. Avoiding black mold through mold remediation steps will help to ensure that your household is safer and healthier for your whole family. There are other types of mold that can develop in your household. Many of these molds can be removed through the use of bleach, or preferably, environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
Older Finishes
If you have an older home, you may have lead and asbestos concerns. The guidelines say that as long as you don’t disturb these surfaces, than removal isn’t required. However, many homeowners take steps to abate these hazardous substances from their homes altogether. Another concern that you may have with an older home is radon. This substance can cause a big problem. High levels of radon exposure can cause lung cancer. Radon is more likely to be present when you have a basement that has exposed dirt surfaces.
Off-Gassing
Some of the products in your home could be releasing VOCs. As These volatile organic compounds are sometimes referred to as off gases. It can come from a variety of sources in your home, such as your paint or flooring. Another source of off gases could be coming from your furniture and your electrical devices. These gases can settle around your home in the form of dust and be hazardous to your health. Try to select products and finishes for your home that have been tested and deemed safe.
Keep these things in mind the next time that you take a look around your home. All of these factors could be affecting your health.
