When your eyes are operating fine without any irritation, it's easy to forget that your eyes need to undergo preventative health measures like the rest of your body. However, if you wait until there is an obvious problem, it can often be too late. However, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your eyes stay in optimal health.

Fix the Air Quality in Your Home

During the winter, heating systems create dry air in your home and office. To keep the air filled with moisture, purchase a portable air humidifier. This can keep the dry air from irritating your eyes. Pet owners should also work to keep pet hair off of the places where they lie down and sleep. Not only do your pets shed dander, they also bring in other types of irritants from the outside that can cause your eyes to get irritated from inflammation.

Get Your Eyes Examined Regularly

If you're age 40 or over, you should go to see the eye doctor once a year. These yearly eye exams help prevent ocular issues like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Professionals, like those at All About Eyes, know that infants should have their very first eye exam between 6 and 12 months. At this age, it is a lot easier for an optometrist to find an ocular condition that can hamper your child's learning capabilities in later years.

Contact Lenses

Many people who wear contact lenses don't clean their lens cases. As a result, they often experience eye irritation. When you throw your contact lens case into your pocket, purse, or put them in a humid bathroom, this creates an environment that breeds bacteria. To avoid this, change your contact lens case every 2 to 3 months and keep it in a cool, dry place. After your contacts are in, empty the case of any and all remaining solution. Then rinse and dry the lens case before you put your contact lenses in them again.

Even if your eyesight is 20/20, this does not mean that you can be lackadaisical about your eye health. It's just as important to get exams for your eyes as it is for your heart or reproductive system. The state of your eye health can change very rapidly, so it is very important that you keep on top of it as you begin to advance in age.
