Beyond a Birthmark: When to Consult a Doctor for Analysis

Moles, freckles, and other birthmarks are a natural part of life. However, some marks on the skin can result in major cosmetic imperfections or even be concerning from a health standpoint. Here are some signs that indicate when a birthmark should receive an analysis from a doctor.

Unsightliness

Birthmarks on the face and neck or on other parts of exposed skin could be garnering unwanted attention from other people because of their unusual or grotesque appearances. Quite often, these unsightly skin marks can be removed with surgery or other cosmetic procedures.

Unusual Color

Moles and other birthmarks often appear brown, black or red in color, but any unusual discoloration should be evaluated by a doctor. Skin marks with mixed colors are sometimes cancerous, and having them removed as quickly as possible can prevent the disease from spreading. Moles and other spots with colors that stand out from other birthmarks on the skin should also be examined.

Growth

Most normal birthmarks stay the same size throughout a person’s life, and a spot that grows gradually or rapidly should be cause for concern. Growth can often indicate that a skin lesion is cancerous. Hemangioma, which is a noncancerous growth consisting of a cluster of blood vessels, can also grow bigger and may be treated with hemangioma surgery.

Pain or Irritation

Birthmarks shouldn’t cause any pain, itchiness or other types of irritation. In addition to certain medical conditions, a mark on the skin can become irritated by clothing or environmental factors, and having it removed can save you a lot of additional agony. A birthmark that bleeds is always concerning and should receive a doctor’s evaluation.

Elevation

Some birthmarks are slightly elevated naturally and are of little concern, but a spot that starts to rise or form a lump on or around it could indicate a health problem. However, elevated birthmarks me be the result of ingrown hairs or clogged skin pores, and remedying these problems should return the mark to normal. Raised spots on the skin are sometimes more prone to cuts with a razor, and having them removed can make shaving much easier.

Birthmarks can be either common or unique, and knowing what to look for is the best way to tell if you should see a doctor. Problematic marks on the skin can often be treated successfully with a variety of methods that can bring about good results and leave skin smoother.
