4 Tips for Keeping a Clean Diagnostics Lab

A diagnostics laboratory is one of the most important areas in any medical facility. It’s where doctors run various tests to identify, diagnose and treat ailments. As such, it’s crucial that this area remains pristine. For those who are new to a diagnostics lab, it can be a little confusing knowing how to properly clean and maintain it. Here are four tips for keeping a clean diagnostics lab.

Follow the Protocols

Every lab has a protocol that everyone must follow. Laboratories use biohazard materials to conduct their tests. If not carefully and properly maintained, it can cause some very nasty problems. All counters must be disinfected and clean shift after shift. It must also be done if any kind of spill, regardless of size. It’s important that all the materials used come in the proper medical product kitting, especially in a laboratory.

Declutter the Area

In a laboratory, it’s important to have as much space as possible. Having the area cluttered opens the door to a wide array of catastrophes. It won’t do to have a doctor slip while carrying a specimen to the testing area. Make sure to remove any potential hazards like boxes, containers, spills, and discarded items. It’s also important that all tables and desks are cleared of any unwanted or unused materials.

Organize and Store Things Accordingly

It pays to be organized, especially in the medical field. You need to have easy access to everything in order to keep tests going smoothly. With the proper storage and organization, the risk of something going wrong is significantly reduced.

Here is a brief list of how you can store and organize everything accordingly.

-          Make sure everything that’s sharp has a sheath over it.

-          Put equipment in storage if it’s not constantly used.

-          Refrain from keeping things like boxes and Styrofoam under desks and on top of shelves.

-          Always hang up coats in the reserved areas.

Be Ready for an Emergency

No matter how careful you are or how organized the lab is, you never know when an emergency can happen. For example, maybe an employee accidentally knocked over a biohazard. Without the right cleaning products readily available, cleaning protocol might not be followed.

Working in a lab can be stressful, which makes it all the more crucial to keep things organized and clean. Understanding the proper protocol and what to do in case of an emergency is most important.
