The Real Difference between Birth Centers and Hospital Births

Pregnancy has a definite way of changing the course of the lives of the expecting parents. From day one there will be a need to make decisions with the child in mind. Of those decisions, one of the most important will be choosing between a birth center and a hospital maternity ward. Many times a birthing center is more readily available and more time-efficient when a baby is in a hurry for delivery. In addition, complications can arise in even a low-risk pregnancy, depending on both external and internal factors. Before making a choice, it is best to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each type of treatment center.

Birth Centers

The most obvious advantage of choosing a birth center is the fact that it is like one-stop shopping. Many birth centers handle care from the beginning of a pregnancy completely thru the birthing process. They are effectively mini-hospitals focused on one healthcare process. These centers deal with pregnancies on a daily basis and are often very professional in all aspects of delivering a child, including informational training for first-time parents. The primary disadvantage is when complications occur during a birth and when access to special care is necessary. Distance could be a problem as well, but most birth centers calculate proximity to a hospital when choosing a business location and developing a standard emergency protocol.

Hospitals

Hospital maternity wards are often designed like birth centers as well, with many even offering more comprehensive instructional prenatal care for complicated pregnancy situations. This is especially true when it appears there could be problems from the very beginning. Hospitals also allow for extended immediate specialist care when complications occur. The fact that hospitals tend to be much more congested with more serious treatments being performed means that mistakes can still happen easily, often resulting in a higher rate of birth injuries. It is important for expectant parents to understand the potential for an injury in a hospital. It is often a good idea to discuss the legal possibilities with a birth injury lawyer before the event of a tragedy because time can be important in some instances.

It is always a good step to discuss the available treatment options with other new parents when expecting a child. Having a child is common in the healthcare industry and specialized care is usually efficient at most facilities, but personal references are still informative. Many times the delivery center options will be dictated by the health insurance company, which could have its own advantages and disadvantages as well. All decisions are serious when the health of your child is dependent on your choices.
