Healthy and Happy: 4 Great Habits to Take Up This Summer

Many people find their summer vacation time to be a good time to accept a new challenge or embark on a new adventure. Summer is also a good time to exchange some unhealthy habits for healthy ones. It’s a good time to focus on what makes you happy and on how you can maintain a sense of happiness throughout the year.

Developing Healthy Eating Habits

Eating a diet that provides proper vitamins and nutrition is beneficial to your overall health. If junk food and fast food make up a large portion of your diet, it's time to abandon that habit and commit to a healthy diet. Generally, it's easier to give up a habit when you have replacement plan in place. If you buy fruit, vegetables and healthy snack food instead of junk food, you won't have the unhealthy stuff in the pantry to tempt you. If preparing healthy meals is a new experience for you, start with simple meal plans that include easy dishes such as steamed, roasted or grilled vegetables. Instead of stopping at fast food locations, try new options that have healthy menu choices available. Make breakfast a daily habit, even if it's simply a quick-fix healthy smoothie.

Make Exercise a Habit

When your work schedule and family life keep you busy, you may think that you don’t need an exercise routine. There is a difference in daily activity and an exercise such as biking. Biking helps burn calories. This can work in conjunction with a health-conscious diet to assure that you reach and maintain a healthy weight. Biking can be beneficial to your health in many ways. It's also a brain-boosting activity. The summer months are an excellent time for you to get into the habit of regularly biking. You may choose to do this alone or with a partner or a group of friends. Making biking a family activity is a good way for the whole family to get some beneficial exercise. Whatever you choose to do, be sure you read up on your local legislation regarding bicycle traffic, since laws can vary by state.

Social Time

There’s an interconnectedness between health and happiness. Establishing a routine that includes socializing with friends can contribute to your overall sense of happiness. Exercising with friends is a good way for each of you to offer support to the other. Dining out with friends on a regular basis can be a form of stress relief. Sports, dancing, hiking and a myriad of other activities can be enjoyed with friends.

Establish Personal Time

It’s hard to be happy when you feel stressed and stress can negatively impact your health. A good habit to establish is the observance of personal time. A period of solitude each day can help reduce stress and ultimately make you happier and more productive. Meditation and journal writing are two solitary activities to consider. You might want to use your personal time to participate in yoga or Tai Chi. Be protective of your personal time regardless of how you choose to use it.

It's easy to get stuck in a rut with bad habits. You might want to use a change of seasons, your birthday or some other significant date as a time to implement changes that will be beneficial to your health and increase your level of happiness. It's good to periodically assess your diet and daily routine to be sure you're taking the best care possible of yourself.
