No matter how much others tell you that they love you, it won’t do any good if you don’t hold love towards yourself. If you don’t love yourself, you don’t allow yourself to be accountable for your decision-making, which can lead you down an even darker path. You don’t have to be the best person; you just have to be the best version for yourself. Here are four ways to overcome poor self-image.

Avoid Perfectionism

If your conditions for self-acceptance are based on avoiding mistakes in every way possible, you’re never going to be happy. Absolutely no one can be expected to live to such a standard. For the vast majority of things in life, you’re going to be imperfect. That doesn’t mean you’ll be bad at them; it just means you’ll have some flaws, especially in the early stages. By relieving yourself from the need to avoid mistakes, you can make yourself feel much better in the process.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Life is not a contest. If you’re constantly comparing yourself to others, you’re going to constantly feel frustrated. Your achievements are your achievements and should not be diminished based on your belief that others are inherently better. When you have a poor self-image and are comparing yourself to others, you could climb Mount Everest and negatively compare yourself to those who did it earlier. The only person that you should be comparing yourself to is yourself.

Help Others

By focusing only on yourself, you can become unwittingly narcissistic. It’s like you feel empowered by feeling bad about yourself. Instead, you should find ways to help those in need. Volunteer with local charities, visit people in nursing homes, or simply reach out to friends or acquaintances to see how they’re doing. By demonstrating your sense of charity, you can greatly improve your self-image.

A low self-image can do more than affect your mood. It can also have profound effects on your body and daily life.
