6 Areas to Focus on to Achieve Health and Wellness

Everyone experiences the stressors in their life in different ways. Some people have more physical stress while others carry significant emotional burdens. Even then, stress cannot be classified into those two categories so easily. The National Wellness Institute explains that wellness can be broken into six areas: physical, emotional, social, occupational, intellectual, and spiritual. It is important to consider each of these areas when trying to build overall health and wellness in life.

Physical

Taking charge of the physical aspect of health can seem to be obvious but is also a very challenging part of life. Each person experiences their own unique challenges, whether through aging, disability, or just neglecting themselves in lieu of other personal responsibilities.

Whatever their circumstances, each person must take charge of their physical wellbeing so that small, easily dismissed problems don’t grow into large, long-term issues. A reasonable diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are an excellent start. Adding in a daily multivitamin or a fiber supplement such as Activated You Morning Complete is another way to boost overall physical health.

Emotional

As varied as each person’s physical needs may be, nothing compares to the spectrum of emotional needs that each person possesses. Emotional wellness levels can have a very physical impact on a person’s health and wellbeing. If there is severe emotional stress, the body will react as if being attacked physically and emotional issues may be overlooked.

Each person should regularly take time to reflect on the things causing them elevated emotions or how they respond to daily situations. Trying new techniques to induce calm such as meditation or breathing exercises or incorporating relaxing ASMR or essential oils may help with emotional wellbeing.

Social

It is becoming more obvious that despite the massive interconnections provided by social media, people are growing farther apart. This may be the cause of some social stressors, but the need for socialization has always been a part of human life. Even for people more comfortable staying home with a book than going to a noisy event, having a fulfilling social life is an important part of overall health. Each person must take some time to foster personal relationships that they will be comfortable leaning on when they need it.

Occupational

It has been endlessly quoted, “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” There is something in that, but even when a person works a job they love, it’s still work, and a person may not always find the fulfillment they wanted from it. There can be days of burnout and frustration in any job, but if it becomes so overwhelming that it is affecting a person’s mental or physical health, then it’s time for a change.

This might come in the form of a total job switch, an adjustment of hours, or just taking a vacation. Keeping a healthy work-life balance will promote better performance and overall wellness.

Intellectual

There is a serious correlation between emotional wellbeing and intellectual expression. Using the mind creatively, whether to express art or ideas, is extremely healthy. Refocusing attention from everyday demands to creative endeavors can create a buffer against stress and increase a range of positive emotions.

Each person should make time to use their thoughtful and creative side, if not as a part of their work, then to break from it. This can be done by taking part in a regular hobby or venturing into unknown territory by learning a new skill.

Spiritual

There are two branches of thought on this important form of wellbeing: religious spiritualism and secular humanism. The religious person can find an internal balance to cope with the negative emotions they experience by measuring them against their belief in a higher power or purpose to life. Those who do not believe in a higher power often find secular humanism to be the best moral compass that will allow them to find a balance between the world around them and their perception of what it should be.

Each person must make their own conclusions regarding spirituality, but it is important that this is addressed to find whole mind-body wellness.
