When you fall into that afternoon slump, reaching for a coffee or other caffeinated beverage seems to be the norm. Though soothing at the time, the effects of caffeine won't last all day. If you get the jitters from a cup of joe or an unhealthy energy drink, this isn't the solution for you. Next time you're headed for a sleepy downward spiral, don't reach for a stimulant. Give your body what it's really asking for and indulge in a power nap.

A Snooze Is Low-Stress

Power nap is the term used to describe a short yet effective snooze that's usually enjoyed in the afternoon to regain your balance for the remainder of the day. If you're leery of midday relaxation, make a pact with yourself to at least try it out by celebrating national nap day. You may find that catching some zzz's during the day is a low stress way to charge your batteries. Studies show that even a short burst of sleep is beneficial to find your focus. Spending this small peaceful time on yourself has many perks.

Sleep Can Save Your Life

Perhaps one of the best possible reasons for powering up with a nap is when you're taking a long road trip. This is one instance when sleep can save your life. At the first sign of drowsiness, you need to get off the road. Stop at the nearest rest area and put your seat back for a good 30-minute rest. You'll wake up feeling more refreshed and better able to react to what's happening on the road.

Counting Sheep Is Low Calorie

In most workplaces when it's time to re-energize, people are likely to crave either chocolate or coffee. These high calorie caffeine-laden treats can often leave you feeling agitated. While it's not always feasible to take a half hour nap at work, closing your eyes for 15-minutes during your morning or afternoon breaks can still help. Head to your car or shut your office door for a little well-deserved catnap and you'll find yourself ready to tackle the rest of the day.

40 Winks Help You Concentrate

No one concentrates well when eyelids are drooping. If you find your head bobbing in front of the computer, that's a sign that your body needs a rest. Much like a cell phone that needs to be juiced back up, you need a break to recharge, too. Returning to your day's duties after a short respite will make it much easier to concentrate. You'll feel sharper and be less apt to make simple mistakes.

Siestas Are Free

Taking a post lunch power nap is a very low investment with high paying rewards. First, a personal siesta costs no money whatsoever. No expensive designer coffee, no pricey massage and no running around when you'd rather just put your head back. Second, the amount of time you contribute is minimal. For a mere 20-minutes or so, you've earned yourself back a few hours of energy.

Nodding Off Is Good For You

Have you ever noticed that children who have had an afternoon nap are pumped up for the rest of the evening? These advantages aren't just for kids. Not only will a nap leave you refreshed, but it can make you happier. Naps promote an upbeat mood that can help eliminate stress. Less stress helps with weight loss, relationships and your overall health. Shuteye also makes you more productive. If you have a deadline to make, consider taking a doze halfway through.

A Simple Solution

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. A little extra rest costs nothing and it's easy to achieve. Whether a long day at work or a busy weekend, if you've never tried power napping give it a chance. Do it for your health. Do it for you. You might very well find yourself addicted to this very healthy and underrated stamina-booster.
