When a loved one is struggling with an addiction, one of the worst things you can do is to isolate them. It’s very difficult to climb out of the hole as devastating as addiction. While it is a really tough road to walk on, it helps when they know that someone loves them and is willing to hold their hand.
Listen
At the core, every person has the desire to be heard and understood. Even if you can’t fully understand where a person is coming from, it’s wise to listen. In many cases, a person just needs to express their emotions and feelings. Commit to being a safe place for your loved one.
Avoid Judgment
One of the main components of cultivating a safe space involves refraining from judgment. When a person feels like they’re being judged, it’s a surefire way to get them to shut down. Always remain open-minded and do your best to monitor your facial expressions. A person who’s in a vulnerable position will notice the slightest ounce of judgment.
Remove Temptations
Though it is a very difficult road to walk, it’s best to lean into the process and really commit. This means that you should be proactive about getting rid of the temptations in the home. If the loved one is your spouse and they’re addicted to alcohol, remove all alcoholic beverages from the home. Replace the alcohol with delicious juices, smoothies and other non-alcoholic drinks. It’s easier to resist temptation when it’s not in a person’s face. Plus, it’s helpful to go on the journey with them. Sure, you might not be addicted to alcohol, but it’s a really selfless act to give it up and partner alongside your loved one to move past the addiction together.
Help Them Get Help
There are professional rehabilitation centers for a reason. In many cases, people need the help of experienced professionals to move from Point A to Point B in their recovery. Encourage your loved one to admit themselves into a treatment center. If they seem to be in denial, sit down with other loved ones and have an addiction intervention session. Hopefully, they’ll see the concern, care and love and make a change.
Get Help
While it’s important for your struggling loved one to get help, you need help too. It’s no easy path. Consider mental health counseling to learn how to process all you’re experiencing. It’s a heavy burden to bear and you need support as well.
While you might know that recovery isn’t an overnight experience, times will come when you wish it was. Remember that while the journey might be an uphill battle, it’s one that you and your family can get over together.
