Injuries can be horrendous to deal with. They can happen suddenly and without warning. They put you in great pain. They can even lead to permanent disability.

However, despite how alarming and disorienting receiving an injury can feel, you need to keep a clear mind afterwards. What you do directly after receiving an injury can be a big factor in determining the future livelihood of you and your family. You need to know what do to protect yourself from further harm both physically and financially.

Get Immediate Medical Attention

Your first concern after receiving an injury should be your own health. If you don’t attend to an injury immediately, that injury could transform into a permanent disability. If it is severe enough, you may even die.

If the injury appears to be serious, call for an ambulance. If you can’t get to your phone, have someone else call for you. EMTs will know what to do to help you. If necessary, perform some emergency care yourself or have someone else perform it for you. If you’re bleeding, for example, stem the bleeding until the ambulance arrives.

Report the Injury

It’s also important that you make sure the injury gets reported. There needs to be some kind of record. If you were at work, your employer must document a workplace injury after you report it to your supervisor. Make sure this documentation is created.

If the injury was the result of someone else’s actions, report what happened to the police so a police report is created and the crime is pursued if one did occur. Even if the injury was your own fault on your own time, make sure that records that prove the injury happened are created by your doctor and take photos for evidence.

Contact an Attorney

In many cases, an injury may not be your fault. You may have been injured due to someone else’s actions. It may have also been due to someone else’s lack of action. If your injury could have been foreseeable and prevented by someone else’s action that had a responsibility to do so, you can possibly prove negligence in court. In that case, you may be able to obtain financial compensation for your injury via a lawsuit. Try to find a law firm with experience in personal injury claims, such as Oaks Law Firm, to handle your case.

Focus on Your Recovery

Often, the immediate medical care provided for an injury is just the first stage of treatment. Many serious injuries have a long recovery phase. Don’t expect your recovery to go fast and take it very seriously. Whether or not you’re serious about follow up treatments and therapies can help determine whether or not you make a full recovery.

Injuries can be sudden, painful and terrifying. Still, try to keep a clear head after receiving one. You need to make the correct decisions regarding getting medical treatment and acting to protect your legal rights. Doing so can make a big difference and allow you to more easily recover from your injury both physically and financially.
