Sports Health: How Athletes Can Work Through Their Injuries

Injuries can create physical and psychological problems for athletes at all stages. An injury can disrupt the training cycle that the athlete has planned months or even years in advance. Given the impact that an injury can have on an athlete's goals, it is important that they quickly regroup and work their way through the injury, to minimize the impact.

Re-Think Your Goals
Talk frankly with your physician to determine the extent of your injury and a realistic time frame for your return to the game. You may determine that your training cycle can be adjusted and you can continue to work toward your goal, or you may decide it makes more sense to cancel your existing plans. If that is the case, immediately look ahead to the next competition. This will motivate you to work on your healing and give you something to look forward to. Trying to make these decisions at such an emotional time can be a challenge. Online coaching programs can help you set, or reset, your goals objectively.

Allow Yourself to Feel Whatever Your Feeling
After an injury, you may feel sad, angry, or even a combination of emotions you cannot make sense of. It's normal to feel emotional and conflicted after an injury, and you shouldn't try to suppress those feelings. Accepting how you feel allows you to move through the healing process more easily. It is important, however, not to let those feelings lead you into a cycle of depression. Feel however you feel, but force yourself to go through normal activities, physical therapy, and other activities to keep you occupied. If you have trouble getting through normal activities, consider seeing a counselor.

Take an Active Role in Your Healing
Consider your doctor a teammate. You both have the same goal, getting you back into competition shape. Work with him or her to understand your injury, the steps needed to rehabilitate it, and any complications you should be looking for. Taking an active role in your healing helps you feel more in control of the situation, which is helpful both physically and mentally.

Continue Training at Whatever Level You Can
as tempting as it may be to curl up in bed and feel sorry for yourself, get into the gym, onto the track, or wherever else you train as soon as possible. Coaching programs can provide you with structure for your rehabilitation program. If you cannot perform even low level physical activity, spend time watching game film, and visualizing proper form.

AS you can imagine, working through an injury can be a challenge. If done properly, however, you can return to competition form stronger, healthier, and better than ever.
