Getting off the Sauce: The Best Practices for Overcoming Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol addiction is something that can plague a person for his or her entire life. However, there are steps that you can take to overcome you own addiction to alcohol and live a healthier life. In many cases, truly overcoming a drinking problem will require willpower and help from friends, family and medical professionals.

Recognize that You Have a Problem

The first step in overcoming an alcohol addiction is understanding that you have a problem. Even if you are able to function relatively well, excess alcohol consumption can wreak havoc on your physical and mental health. If you find that you can’t go more than a few minutes or hours without a drink, you should make a point to get help.

Recovery Is Not Always a Linear Process

It is not uncommon for recovering addicts to relapse more than once on their journey to achieve sobriety. Therefore, it is important that you don’t see a return trip to an alcohol rehabilitation program as a failure or as a sign that you won’t ever get sober. Furthermore, you should attend meetings or have a person who you can call or otherwise contact whenever you feel tempted to drink. This can provide the strength necessary to avoid alcohol when temptation to consume it sets in.

Pursue an Interest or Hobby

You may have an easier time avoiding the urge to drink by indulging in a new hobby or interest instead. For instance, if you like to draw, you could create a comic book character and post the results online. If you like to play sports, you could join a recreational league or train for an Olympic qualifying event. Even if you don’t have a realistic chance of representing your country, having a long-term goal to pursue can take your mind off of alcohol.

Reward Yourself on a Regular Basis

Overcoming an addiction takes hard work and motivation. When you achieve a goal that you set for yourself, recognize the achievement with a small reward. For instance, if you go a week without drinking, treat yourself to a nice dinner or a night fishing on the lake. These rewards provide motivation to keep working toward your ultimate goal.

Over time, an alcohol addiction could strain relationships with family members or make it hard to get a job. It could also lead to legal problems or physical issues that could be difficult to recover from. Therefore, it is in your best interest to do whatever it takes to overcome your alcohol addiction.
