Dentures have been used as replacements for natural teeth for a long time, but they have their drawbacks and many people do not want them. Patients should be informed about their options when faced with tooth replacement so they can understand the pros and cons of each and make the choice they feel most comfortable with. There are three main alternatives to dentures.

Bridges

In traditional bridges, one or more false teeth are anchored to the two neighboring teeth, which are given crowns in preparation. There are other types of bridges as well, including Cantilever bridges and Maryland bridges. Cantilever bridges are anchored to only one tooth instead of two. Maryland bridges are where a metal or porcelain frame holding the fake tooth is bonded to the backs of the two adjacent teeth. Bridges help restore a patient’s ability to chew and speak properly as well as correct the distribution of bite force. They are strong enough to replace molars and a good alternative if a patient cannot get an implant or wants a simpler, cheaper procedure.

Dental Implants

Dental implants have quickly become the preferred method of replacing lost teeth. Unlike dentures and bridges, they utilize an artificial root that allows a fake tooth to function exactly like a natural one. Without the support of teeth roots, bone tends to erode away, putting more teeth at risk and giving the face a sunken appearance. Implantsare the most natural-looking and natural-feeling tooth replacement available. Success rates for implants are generally high but they may not be an option if there is not enough bone left to support them in your jaw.

Veneers

If your teeth are not in good shape but still in place, veneers might be a good option to consider. Veneers are a largely cosmetic procedure that consist of a porcelain layer made to look like natural teeth that is affixed over the teeth. They are a relatively simple way to improve how your teeth look if they are discolored, chipped, worn down, have gaps or are crooked. The downsides to veneers are that they are not a good option if you have tooth decay or gum disease and they cannot replace natural teeth.

Dentures have their purpose, but there are alternatives if you don’t want them or there are better options. Talk to a dental professional about what can be done. There might be several ways to restore your smile.
