Your Third Act: How to Take Care of your Health in your Twilight Years

As people age, it's common to experience a number of different ailments and conditions due to deterioration that begins to occur throughout the body. For many seniors, it can be easy to cover up the symptoms with medication and simply cope with the discomfort. Although it may be impossible to avoid aging, there are still a number of steps you can take to improve your health in your twilight years.

Perform Moderate Exercise

Many seniors may want to avoid strain and injuries on their body with exercise, but avoiding physical activity can cause the body to decline at a faster rate. Participate in moderate exercise three to four times a week to promote circulation in the body and shed excess weight that is easy to gain with a slower metabolism. Consider walking or light jogging, playing tennis, and riding your bike to enjoy different types of physical activity that won't put too much strain on the body. This is one of the great reasons for retiring in Florida due to the outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in each season of the year.

Practice Mental Activities

Cognitive decline often occurs with age and can affect memory and your ability to problem solve. It's important to practice mental activities each day to exercise your brain and remain stimulated. Make a habit out of completing crossword puzzles, playing card games, and reading the newspaper each day to improve your mental capacity and remain sharp.

Participate in Community Activities

To maintain your health, it's important to remain social and participate in community activities that are available through a retirement center where you may reside. You can participate in different outings that include movie nights, exercise classes, and live entertainment while forming relationships with other individuals. This can improve your mood and reduce the risk of depression or anxiety due to isolation.

Stick to a Natural Diet

Reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes by eating a natural diet that includes lean meats, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This will prevent gaining weight and can maintain your mobility due to less pressure that is put on your joints.

Although it can be challenging to work harder to maintain your health in your twilight years, there are practical steps to take to improve your well-being. By staying mentally and physically active, you can reduce your risk of certain ailments or diseases while increasing your lifespan.
