Childhood Dental: How to Prevent Premature Tooth Loss in Your Children

When you are a parent, there are many things to think about, including proper oral hygiene for your children. You must make sure that your daughter is caring for her teeth and gums to prevent early loss of teeth. Here are a few ways to prevent premature tooth loss in your children.

Provide a Nutritious Diet

Make sure that your child is consuming a nutritious diet that contains several minerals and vitamins that will keep her teeth stronger. In addition to numerous fruits and vegetables, your child requires lean protein, whole grains and dairy products. Avoid giving your child sticky or sugary snacks and beverages such as potato chips or soft drinks.

Provide Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a substance that helps to prevent tooth decay, and you can find toothpaste and mouth rinses that contain this chemical. Many municipal water treatment plants add fluoride to the tap water, so if your child drinks a lot of water, then her teeth will have additional protection. If you live in an area that doesn’t have fluoride in the water, then you can give your child supplements that contain this substance.

Flossing in Addition to Brushing

It is essential for a child to floss her teeth once a day in addition to brushing her teeth twice a day. You can make flossing easier by supplying a flavorful product that tastes like grapes or bananas. Teach your child how to floss correctly by demonstrating how to hold the strands while scraping away the food and beverage debris that is on the teeth.

Have an Oral Irrigator

If your child has sensitive gums and soft oral cavity tissues, then buy an oral irrigator to rinse the bacteria from her mouth. These small appliances have tanks that you fill with clean tap water so that you can pass a wand over your child’s teeth to remove beverage and food debris. The water that is emitted from the wand is pressurized so that it will blast away food particles that are located between the teeth and along the gums.

Visit a Dentist

It is important for children to have routine dental services at least every six months so that a dentist can remove a buildup of plaque that can cause tooth decay. A dentist can also apply protective sealants to a child’s teeth to help prevent cavities in these difficult to reach areas of the mouth. While having a dental appointment, a dental hygienist can also teach your child how to brush and floss her teeth correctly to prevent halitosis, cavities or gingivitis.

Protect Teeth during Sports

In addition to proper oral hygiene and a nutritious diet, you should make sure that your child is wearing a protective mouth guard on her teeth while playing sports. You can buy generic mouth guards at drugstores, or you can have customized devices made by a dentist. Make sure to replace mouth guards as the items become too small in your growing child’s mouth.
