Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Conventional Treatment - Antidepressants

Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. It is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how anti depression medication effects women with PMS.


I. How anti depression medication effects women with PMS
Most women sufferer from the PMS with symptoms of depression in the second half of menstrual cycle, but in some cases, the symptom becomes so severe for some women, it interferes with daily activity may be suggested to take the anti depression medication. Some medication are so effective in treating the psychological symptoms without some side effects because it helps maintain levels of serotonin which is important in controlling stress thereby, reducing the symptom of depression.

1. Re occurrence
Some medication helps to treat depression effectively, but when the medication are withdrawn the symptoms come back. It becomes so addictive causing many withdrawal symptoms.

2. Drowsiness and headache
Since most antidepressants have their sedative effects in the nervous system, long term used patient or overload may cause drowsiness, fatigue and slight headache

a)Nervous tension
Since the medication involves in controlling the serotonin hormone, medication withdrawal cause fluctuation of the levels of neurotransmitters and brain chemical leading to mood swing and depression.

b) Digestive problem
Some women after withdraw from the anti depression medication may experience digestive disorder caused by unbalance of levels of serotonin in cells lining of the stomach resulting in abnormality function of the gastrointestinal tract and digestive disorder.

c) Hand tremors and muscle cramps
Anti depressants may interfere with the function in nervous system in controlling the body muscles as resulting of the imbalance of electrolyte and hormone production.
