Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Minerals

Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure.  Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how minerals effect women with PMS.


1. Magnesium
Magnesium not only important has a calming effects for nervous system, it also helps in production of insulin and regulates the levels of sugar in bloodstream resulting in lessening the risk of nervous tension such as mood swing, anxiety, depression, etc. and food craving.

2. Calcium
Women with PMS are found to have low levels of calcium just before ovulation resulting in irritability, anxiety, tiredness and menstrual cramps. Intake calcium together with vitamin D and right ration of magnesium helps to reduce the above symptoms.

3. Zinc
Zinc helps to convert linolenic acid to Gamma-linolenic then to PGE1, the prostaglandins hormones which help to balance the levels of blood sugar, regulate the levels of prolactin hormone and the aid kidney in urinary secretion resulting in reducing the symptoms of PMS for some women.

4. Chromium
Chromium is vital mineral in aiding the body in carbohydrate metabolism and controlling the levels of blood sugar in the blood stream. Deficiency of chromium causes insulin being blocked resulting in weigh gain and hypoglycemia.

5. Manganese
Beside helping to improve the thyroid function and liver in fat metabolism, it also helps to increase energy for our body needs and stabilize the blood sugar levels in the bloodstream.
