Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Conventional Treatment--The Pill

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure.  Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how conventional treatment helps to treat PMS and it's side effects.

Conventional treatment has been proven to have some success in treating symptoms of PMS with some side effects.

I. How the pill effects women with premenstrual syndrome
The pill contains synthesis estrogen and progesterone taking in 3 weeks and stopping for one weeks. It alters the lining of the womb by stopping ovulation and making the reproductive system hostile to sperm. It works for some women to reduce the symptoms of PMS but not for others.

II. Side effects
1. Bleeding and spotting
Some women taking the pill experience lighter period but in fact, it is not a period but only the blood withdraw caused by side effect of the pill.

2. Headache
Headache is caused by the higher progesterone levels in the women body after taking pill and it will levels off in the weeks with off the pill. it is helpful if women either switch to pill with lower progesterone or increase intake of foods containing more phytoestrogen to reduce the symptom.

3. Vomiting
Vomiting started soon after you began taking may interference with the normal function of digestive system resulting in vomiting.

4. Lower sex drive
Since the pill containing synthesis estrogen which inhibits the levels of estrogen causing hormone imbalance ( higher levels of progesterone in the body) for some women with PMS resulting lower
sex drive.

5. Depression and anxiety
The hormone imbalance caused by either higher levels of estrogen or progesterone in the body will inference with the normal function of nervous system in hormone secretion resulting in over production of serotonin leading to depression and anxiety.

6. Water retention and breast tenderness
a) Water retention
The pill may have some effects in gallbladder and put pressure in the function of kidney
in urinary secretion resulting in fluid retention in the body tissues.
b) Breast tenderness
Breast tenderness may be caused by irregularity of the levels of estrogen and progesterone, high levels of progesterone or vitamins and minerals deficiency as resulting of intake of the pill for some women with PMS.
