Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure.  Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how light therapy effects women with PMS.


I. Definition
Light therapy is one type of treatment involved in exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light by using lasers. It has been used effectively in treating seasonal depression.

II. How light therapy effects women with PMS
1. photic stimulation
It is said photic stimulation helps to restore the normal hormone production for women with PMS before ovulation thereby helping the body the relax and reducing symptoms of mood swing.

2. Melatonin
Our body pineal gland has a special ability to response to light. It is a biological clock in the human body, and it helps to secret hormone accordingly. Any damage to the biological clock causes unbalance of production melatonin hormone resulting in symptoms of insomnia and nervous mention.

3. Seasonal depression
Some women with PMS also found to have seasonal depression because of the change of daylight. By flicking the red light, it helps to restore the hormone produced by the pineal and adrenal gland in secreting melatonin, resulting in lessening symptoms of sugar craving, depression and lethargy.

4. Unhealthy lifestyle
We live in place where we can go shopping and party all night. this type of life style distort the natural behaviour of hormone in our body. Restoring the normal cycle of light in the day and night will helps to put our body back to function properly resulting in decrease the risk of hormone imbalance for women with PMS.

5. Reproductive system and light
Many cultures believe that women menstrual cycle is closely related to the moon cycle and the change of the moon during it' circulation to the earth .has an effect on each phrase of menstrual cycle, thereby getting back to the normal cycle of dark and light circle will help to restore the productive system resulting in lessening the symptoms of PMS.
