Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss How Chinese herbs-morinda root ( ba ji tian) effects women with PMS.



I. Definition
Morinda is a member of the Rubiaceae family, native to Malaysia and Australia. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in treating reproductive,urinary and menstrual disorders.

II. How Chinese herbs effects women with PMS.
1. Water retention
Morinda root contains high amount of potassium which is essential for balancing the levels of salt in the body and improving the lymphatic function in regulating the fluid in our body tissues. Deficiency of potassium causes water retention for some women with PMS.

2. Linoleic acid
Morinda contains high amount of linoleic acid which helps to convert essential fatty acid in to GLA resulting in lessening the production of PGE2 and reducing the uterus pain and cramps.

3. Flavone glycosides
Since it also contains flavone glycosides, it helps to improve the muscle of the large intestine in moving stool resulting in lessening the risk of constipation.

4. Immune system
It also contains carotene, vitamin A and C which is not only vital for immune system in fighting against irregular cells growth including tumors, cancer and endometriosis, but also guard our body against infection and inflammation including the women reproductive system.

5. Beta-sitosterol
The chemical compound beta-sitosterol are phytosterol with chemical structure similar to that of cholesterol, it helps to improve circulatory system in binding against the bad cholesterol in the bloodstream resulting in icreasing the transportation of oxygen and nutrient to the nercous system cells thereby, decreasing the symptom of nervous tension caused nutrients and oxygen deficiency.
