Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their diet. It is defined as faulty function of ovaries related to women menstrual cycle, it effects the women physical and emotional state and sometimes interference with daily activities as resulting of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome happens in one or two weeks before menstruation and then declining when the period starts. It is said the symptoms can be so severe that between 10-15% of women have to take time off work, costing businesses millions of dollars a year. In this article, we will discuss how licorice root effects women with PMS.


I. Definition
The liquorice plant is a legume , native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year for variety of women reproductive system problems including premenstrual syndrome.

II. How dandelion effects women with PMS
1.Hormone imbalance
As we know phytoestrogen in the licorice root helps to reduce the fluctuation of levels of estrogen and progesterone for women with PMS resulting in lessening the risk of hormone imbalance leading to all kind of premenstrual symptoms.

2. Water retention
licorice root helps to inhibit the levels of aldosterone hormone by blocking aldosterone receptors that helps to increase the lymphatic and kidney function in regulating the body fluid.

3. Adrenal gland
It also contains substance which is similar to adrenal cortical hormone resulting in increase the function of adrenal gland in secreting the production of serotonin that helps to reduce the nervous tension and symptoms of PMS.

4. Nervous tension
Licorice root also contains carbenoxolone which helps to inhibit an enzyme in the brain that is involved in making stress-related hormones, thereby increasing the the brain function in stress regulation.

5. Laxative
It's laxative effects help to loosen stool and eliminate the undigested remains of food in the large intestine and colon resulting the in lessening the risk of menstrual pain cramps caused by constipation for some women with PMS.
