As we mentioned in previous articles during the last stage of the menstrual cycle normally a layer of endometriosis lining in the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood but instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body causing endometriosis. Endometriosis also reacts to hormonal signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating it through the menstrual period. In this article, we will discuss the endometrial biopsy.

I. Definition

In case of abnormal irregular and heavier vaginal bleeding, endometrial biopsy is the first diagnosis that your doctor will do. It is perform at the doctor office, some tissues are removed from the lining of uterus is removed for diagnosis.

II. Procedure

Endometriosis biopsy is performed at the office. As you lie on the exam table, your doctor will insert a straw like instrument through the opening of the cervix with gentle suction to collect some tissues from the lining of uterus. The collection then will sent to lab for diagnosis. You can leave the doctor office after the biopsy completed in a few minutes. Normally, you will feel OK, but some women may few cramp during or after the procedure. You doctor may prescribe a pain reliever for you to take home.

Your doctor will instruct you the following

a) No sexual intercourse
b) No douching
c) No tampons

for one to two weeks

III. Risks

The endometrial biopsy is a very safe procedure, but with some risks

a) There are slight chance that uterus may be injured during biopsy.
b) Infection caused by bacteria in the uterus.
c) Some bleeding.
