Your family is your whole world. They tend to be the source of much of your pain and pleasure throughout life. Just as you take your children to the doctor on a regular basis to ensure their physical health, it’s also a good idea to institute efforts to keep them in a positive mental health state. Here are three great ways to promote positive mental health in your family.

Take an Interest

One of our most basic human needs is attention. We’re innately programmed to want to give attention and get attention from others around us. Keep this in mind when dealing with your family. Just as you want to share the highlights and troubles of your day, so do the rest of your family members. Give them the opportunity to have the spotlight. Take interest on a regular basis to ensure that all your family members are getting the attention they need to maintain a positive mental health state.

Encourage Spontaneity

Another basic human need is the ability to be stimulated by the world around us. It’s very easy to get stuck in the same day to day grind. This can hinder your ability to interact with the world around you and experience new stimuli. Your family members operate at the same basic human level as you do. For this reason, you should encourage spontaneity from time to time. While you don’t need to provide it every single day, you do need to stimulate interest in new things every so often to keep your family in a positive mental health state.

Encourage a Sense of Community

Looking again at our most basic human needs we have a sense of community. We need to feel as if we’re apart of something bigger than ourselves. While your family environment is a great way to help create a sense of community for your family, it shouldn’t be the only one that they experience. Encourage your family members to join other community groups. These could be anything that promotes community, including sports teams, clubs, church groups, volunteering at adoption agencies, business groups, school clubs, and so forth.

The mental health of all our family members needs to be one of our biggest priorities. When your mental health is not stable, the rest of your life tends to weigh down in darkness. To help ensure that your family’s mental health is in great shape, you should take the time to promote the three behaviors above.
