Need Oral Surgery? 3 Strategies For Dental Success

There are several reasons as to why you might need oral surgery. Your wisdom teeth could be coming in and causing pain or growing in a manner that won't allow them to break through the gums, resulting in the need for surgery. Another reason why you would have surgery is because of an infection or a tooth that needs to be extracted. There are some tips to keep in mind so that you can have a successful surgical procedure along with a few things that you want to remember not to do after the surgery for the healing process to go smoothly.

Before Surgery

You might think that oral surgery is a simple process where you go to the doctor and are given a sedative or anesthetic before the procedure is completed. While this is usually true, there are some things that you should do before you get to the office if you want the procedure to be a success. Stop taking medications about a day or two before the procedure as some of them will interact with the anesthesia that you're given. If you're given pain medication, you need to take it before the pain begins. Oral pain can be excruciating, so you want to stay ahead of it as much as possible. Your diet should be soft foods or liquids before and after the procedure so that you don't risk doing any further damage to your tooth before the surgery.

Finding A Doctor

Most dentists will be able to do a simple extraction. Some consider this oral surgery, but if you need something a bit more detailed done, then you need to find an oral surgeon who has the proper tools in the office for the procedure that you need to have done. An oral surgeon should have all of the materials that are needed, such as medical chairs, nitrous oxide, masks, and machines to monitor your vital signs and IV materials in the event that you are given sedation medications through an IV. If the surgeon doesn't have the medical equipment in the office, then it usually means that you would have to go to an outpatient facility for the surgery. This can sometimes be more expensive, and you will usually be given general anesthesia, which means that someone would have to drive you home. If you don't want to deal with this kind of issue, then you should contact as many oral surgeons as possible to find one who has the equipment that is needed for your safety in the office.

Mistakes That You Can Avoid

There are a few mistakes that you might not think about after oral surgery that can easily be avoided. Don't drink through a straw as this can dislodge a blood clot in the mouth, causing excessive bleeding. Avoid exercising for at least 12 hours after surgery. Let the doctor know about any bleeding that lasts for six hours or more after the surgery and any pain that you can't get under control. Take your medications as prescribed. Don't rinse your mouth for about 24 hours after surgery. This can also dislodge any blood clot that has formed. Use a gauze pad to help with any bleeding that you see right after the procedure is over. Try not to eat anything too hot or too cold as the area will be sensitive for about 24 hours after surgery.

Oral surgery can be a frightening experience, but if you're prepared, then you'll do fine with the procedure. Talk to the doctor to ensure that all of the tools are ready and available in the office. Follow the instructions given, and take it easy for the first day after surgery.
