Where to Start? A Beginner’s Guide to Cannabis Products

There is little resistance from people who are quickly learning that cannabis is useful for our good health, yet most people are left wondering how to use it. If CBD is an oil, do we rub it on our bodies or put it in our food when cooking? Sure, people smoke it, but not everyone is interested in getting “high” necessarily. The same goes for ingesting it in edibles. The question is where to start? Here are the three most common methods of delivering the beneficial effects of cannabis products:

Vaping

While CBD is the non-psycho-active compound of cannabis, it contains so many beneficial effects for the body. Scientists are still researching the many ways CBD can be used to benefit our health. Many people have proceeded with familiar methods, such as smoking only with a new twist: Vaping.

Vaping has become a lifestyle choice. With so many flavors, it is a casual option for relaxing and taking it easy. Using a vape pen to consume CBD is a most effective way to receive the benefits as it is delivered directly to the bloodstream through the intake into the lungs.

It is a quicker method of delivery that provides higher bio-availability since it need not be metabolized through the liver or other filtration processes in the body. For those who already use a vape pen or are accustomed to smoking, it is an easy step. For those who are not keen on using this method, relax. There are other ways to deliver the benefits of cannabis.

Topical CBD Cream

Fundamentally, scientists have found that our bodies have so many built-in receptors that closely match what is found in cannabinoid compounds that they named these receptors the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It is as if we fit hand-in-glove with what our bodies need and what cannabis provides.

Since the ECS regulates so many physiological processes in our bodies, it is no surprise to learn that CBD is very effective in topical applications. It has been studied as an acne remedy, shown positive results as an anti-aging cream and when combined with other compounds was shown to be potently active in fighting a particularly resistant skin condition known as MRSA.

As the largest organ of the human body, our skin has so many cannabinoid receptors that it is easy to understand how a topical application of CBD would have beneficial effects. Many people use it as a pain reliever. Others find it helpful after a strenuous workout to ease the stress and soreness that typically follows. However, the effects are localized and do not last as long since it cannot enter the bloodstream very effectively in this method of treatment.

Daily Microdose Supplement

One way of making your CBD go a long way is to take it in microdoses, whether daily or semi-daily. When you figure the average gummy has 10 milligrams of cannabis, a daily dose of between 2.5 and 5 milligrams is below the average therapeutic use, although the lack of regulation leaves the standards of doses untested and pretty much up to each individual as to how much is too much.

One of the advantages of CBD is that you really cannot overdose on it. Microdosing is not as therapeutically effective since you are not receiving enough to make that level of difference. However, studies in mice have shown how CBD can build up in the body over an extended period of taking such low doses since it is stored in the fat cells.

How does this help? We know that CBD helps alleviate inflammation, the source of many of today’s debilitating illnesses. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, and injury need not be in the form of impact or from a collision. Even some of the foods we eat can be injurious to our health for how the body may have difficulty metabolizing the ingredients.

Cannabis treatment has proven helpful in alleviating the symptoms of depression, stress and anxiety particularly in those who suffer from PTSD. Studies in mice have shown how the neuroprotective antioxidant properties of cannabis appear to protect the brain against the effects of aging.

With what we already know and how much there is still to learn about CBD, we can take Dr. David Allen’s recommendation to heart. A retired cardiac surgeon, Dr. Allen advises that future doctors should learn and understand how to use cannabis as he is convinced that CBD is quite possibly the most significant medical breakthrough that will save more lives since the discovery of sterile surgical equipment.
