Eyes, Ears, Mouth, and Nose: How to Keep Your Head in the Self Care Game

You may spend countless hours nurturing your skin and hair. But how much attention do you give to caring for your eyes, ears, mouth, and nose? To keep your head in the self-care game, you need to adopt certain habits. Check out these simple tips here.

Eyes

The eyes are the windows of the soul. During your daily hygiene routine, use separate cloths for the face and the body. Reserve a special section for your peepers to prevent infection. The Association of Optometrists also recommends:

  • Lubricating the eyes
  • Taking regular breaks from computer screens
  • Blinking often
  • Eating omega-3 rich foods
  • Drinking plenty of water

Ears

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, about 12 million people seek medical attention for impacted ear wax. The reason for this high figure is because many people do not clean their ears properly. For best results:

  • Let warm water run in the ear while showering, tipping the head in the opposite direction to drain.
  • Gently rotate the corner of a moistened face cloth in the ear.
  • Grab any box of cotton swabs and read the warning label “Do not insert in the ear canal.” Cotton swabs are designed to collect dirt and wax build up around the outer ear only.
  • Apply mineral oil or over-the-counter softener to hardened wax for easier removal.

Mouth

Unfortunately, the mouth is a breeding ground for microorganisms. Without proper hygiene, food and drinks leave bacteria behind, which may lead to plaque, cavities, and gingivitis. Besides brushing, flossing, and getting regular dental examsand checkups, you should:

  • Eat healthy meals and snacks. A healthy diet helps your teeth stay healthy, too.
  • Drink fluoridated water with meals to wash away sugar and acids and help strengthen teeth.
  • Replace sugary drinks with milk and water to cut down on bad buildup and help strengthen the teeth.
  • Use a straw to reduce contact of sweetened beverages with your teeth. This could cause staining and weakening of your teeth’s protective barrier.

Nose

Think of the nose as a filter to your lungs. Every speck of dust that makes it passed nose hairs can cause respiratory infections and allergies. However, you can breathe easy when you maintain a daily nasal cleaning routine. ENTs say using a saline solution to clean nasal cavities will help:

  • Rid impurities
  • Add moisture
  • Thin mucus
  • Reduce snoring
  • Ease chronic nasal congestion, sinusitis, and seasonal allergies

The eyes, ears, nose, and mouth create your face—and you can tell when they’re feeling less than healthy. Additionally, they give us the ability to see, hear, smell and taste. They’re important. By maintaining a regular self-care routine, you can keep your senses operating at healthy levels.
