Relaxing Recreation: 3 Hobbies That Could Benefit Your Mental Health

With 40 million people suffering from anxiety, it's important to find worthwhile activities that promote mental health and relaxation. This can be hard to do in our busy world, but not impossible. While virtually any activity that gives us tranquility can be great for our mental health, there are a few that are geared to calming the mind and body. Here are three hobbies that can benefit your mental health.

1. Running And Walking

One of the best ways to ease anxiety and calm the mind is walking or running. This releases dopamine into the brain, the "feel good" chemical, as well as serotonin and endorphins. It's important to try and do this in nature, but you can take a jog around your neighborhood as well. Many communities also offer meet up groups, where you can find other nature and exercise enthusiasts to connect with. Getting out of the office and into some sunshine while boosting your heart rate is great for your mind, body, and spirit!

2. Community Service

This is an excellent way to give back to the community and feel great about what you are doing. Not only does it make us feel better to help those in need, community service offers the opportunity to connect with other individuals. Connection to other humans is a key to positive mental health. Offering to cook at your local soup kitchen can help you learn new cooking skills, socialize and make new friends with the other volunteers, and get to know those in your community who receive meals.

3. Music Lessons

It has been known for years that music helps to boost our mood and quiet our mind. It's even better if you pick up a new instrument to try, such as the guitar or piano. If you are struggling through learning a new instrument, there are plenty of options. Professionals, such as those at Rockstar Music Central, offer lessons for a variety of instruments, including drums. Nothing feels better at the end of a frustrating day than jamming out on your drum set.

These activities are all great for those who are feeling like they've had more than just a string of bad luck or a few down days. While stress is a part of life, it doesn't have to consume you! Give these hobbies a try and see which ones you like. You never know, one of them could become your new obsession.
