Visiting the dentist can be scary. There’s just something uncomfortable about a person sticking their fingers and tools into your mouth. However, regular dentist visits are crucial for maintaining excellent oral health. Not visiting a dentist can severely impact your teeth, gums, and the rest of your health. Here are why routine dental cleanings are critical.

Prevents Tooth Decay

While you can do your utmost at cleaning your teeth yourself, you just can’t provide the same quality of a clean as your dentist. They have tools and equipment that you can’t get at your local store. Those tools effectively clean parts of your teeth that you can’t reach with your toothbrush. They also help remove plaque and keep your enamel strong and healthy. Without going to a dentist, that plaque can start to build up. You’ll no longer be able to brush the tooth beneath the plaque. As a result, your tooth can start to decay. It may fall out or you may develop a cavity.

Flossing

Few people actually enjoy flossing. It’s an extra step that many people skip because it takes too long. Yet not flossing can also affect the health of your gums. If you go to a dentist regularly, they can provide you with thorough flossing that can maintain the health of your gums. Flossing can also help break up plaque that builds up between the teeth. Your gums can be treated to an extensive clean when visiting the dentist office.

Tooth Care

If a cavity has already formed, then a regular dentist visit can find that cavity and correct it. Dental crowns may be used or fillings. Sometimes the tooth may need to be pulled entirely if the state of decay has progressed too much. Leaving the cavity, however, is an even worse idea. It can continue to damage the tooth and eat it away. Once it reaches your gums, you could be subject to gum disease. It can spread to neighboring teeth as well. One by one, your teeth might fall out or become unhealthy. Visiting your dentist can stop the spread of tooth decay and gum disease.

Fluoride

While you can sometimes get fluoride through your water, toothpaste, and mouthwash, you typically won’t receive the amount that you need. Fluoride treatments at a cleaning can help strengthen your enamel.

Visiting your dentist regularly is essential for optimal oral health. Strengthen your teeth and prevent disease by receiving dental care.
