Opening your medical practice is an exciting time. It will give you a way to care for patients and manage a business at the same time. A medical practice is one where you will need to have the proper staff on hand to provide care when it's needed or when you aren't able to meet with patients throughout the day. Before opening your office, there are some items that you want to check off of your list.
Used Or New?
New equipment is often the best, especially items that will be used for the personal care of patients, such as thermometers, cotton swabs and other hygienic items. However, the larger pieces of equipment that you will need for the office, such as chairs for the waiting room or desks for the office area of the practice, can be purchased used. Look at doctor's offices that are closing or that are upgrading so that you can get items at a lower price, saving you money until you get your office started and can make your own upgrades.
Tables
There are several kinds of medical exam tables that you can purchase. Look at the design that you need for the patients you will care for as some of them are easier for elderly patients to use, and some are ideal for children as they have a soft top and are easier to get on and off of for the patient. You should look at the procedures that you will offer as some tables have a warming tray to keep utensils from getting cold. Some tables have a light on them, which is a benefit if you are a doctor who needs to examine smaller areas of the body to get more details about what might be wrong with the patient.
X-ray Machines
If you plan to take x-rays of patients in the office instead of sending them to another office in town to have the images taken, then you need to get a machine that can be used by trained staff members. You want the machine to be able to take images of all areas of the body. Sometimes, an x-ray machine is one that attaches to the ceiling, which means that you will need an added room for the equipment. However, there are x-ray machines that can be rolled from one room to the other. These are smaller and are sometimes less expensive. They are also convenient if you have more than one patient at a time who needs to have an x-ray completed.
The Smaller Pieces
Whether you are working with adults or children, you'll want to have several smaller pieces of equipment on hand, such as bandages, extra needles for drawing blood or giving injections, antiseptics and stethoscopes. You also want to have blood pressure cuffs and other items that are used for keeping track of vital signs. These are items that you want to get new instead of used. When the items arrive at the office, you want to make sure that they aren't damaged. With needles, you want to try to get plastic materials whenever possible instead of those that are made of glass as they can easily break if they aren't handled carefully. Thermometers should be digital so that you can easily change out the materials used for scanning the forehead or the ear to get the proper temperature.
Before you open your medical practice, you need to have all of the supplies that are needed for your patients. From comfortable tables and chairs to the smaller bandages for children, you want to have everything in place so that you are ready to see patients.
