Are You Sick? How to Get Better By Detoxing Your Body

The modern world seems driven to fill your body with harmful toxins. It is impossible to completely escape toxicity. Toxins are found in water, air and food. Your body absorbs some toxins from many of things you touch and do every day. The good news is that your body is also remarkably good at handling toxins, controlling them and eliminating them before they cause problems. The best thing you can do to maintain your health and energy is to help boost your body’s natural detoxifying systems. This is commonly referred to as a detox. It is something that most people can do regularly unless they have certain serious health conditions.

Detoxing Through Daily Diet

While there are many programs and supplements out there that supposedly make detox more effective or easier, these products are often expensive and generally unnecessary. According to the Global Healing Center, a simple way to detox is to focus on what you are putting into your body both on a daily basis and occasionally during a focused detox period.

As long as you are getting proper nutrition and hydration, your body will naturally do some detoxification every day. Your colon, liver and kidneys are the primary detoxifying organs in your body. They work constantly to flush your body of toxins. A healthy diet should be focused on primarily fruits, vegetables and healthy fats while minimizing meat and grains. Processed foods and those with lots of preservatives, colors and flavorings should be eliminated entirely. Most of the ingredients in processed foods, while not overtly harmful, are toxins that buildup in the body and eventually cause problems.

Focused Juice Detox and Fasting

You can boost and jump start your body’s detoxing ability simply by using juices and fasting. There are many ways you can do this, and a wide variety of programs and additional information out there. It is important to choose a system that will work well for you and that you are comfortable with. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking certain medications or have certain chronic illnesses, you will want to talk to a doctor before trying any serious juice detox or fast.

The primary aim of a juice detox is to provide your body with a rich supply of vitamins and minerals with minimal impact on your digestive system. This allows your digestive system to rest and stimulates the detox work of your liver and kidneys. It is important to focus on vegetable juices with some fruit juice added for flavor. If you consume mostly or entirely fruit juice, you will be taking in far too much sugar. The balance of a good juice detox is that it gives your body just enough carbohydrate so that you aren’t starving but are still resting your digestive system and not spiking your blood sugar or taxing your liver with excessive fructose.

A juice detox can be done safely for three to five days. They usually should not be done longer because a prolonged detox or fast may do more harm than good. Your body still needs a minimum supply of protein and fat, which you do not get during a juice detox.

Relaxation, Meditation and Sleep

Resting your body is also an important part of detox. Sleep and meditation have been shown to stimulate detoxifying effects in the brain, and rest also stimulates your body’s detoxifying processes. In contrast, excessive stress may shutdown your detoxing processes and increase the accumulation of toxins in your body. This is because your body generally considers detoxing to be a secondary survival activity. Only when you aren’t using energy for other things will your body devote that energy to detox. The more you give your body time and energy to devote to this rejuvenation, the more efficient it will be. Anything that helps you relax can help to stimulate your detox. This may include massage, a warm bath or spending time in a sauna or Jacuzzi with some of the best hot tub accessories that can help you to relax. Warm water and sweating in a spa or sauna may also stimulate the release of toxins through the skin.

A detox activity works best when it is done altogether and as a routine. Once a month or every few months, devote a few days to a good quality and complete detox that combines the rejuvenating effects of a juice fast with the relaxation of meditation, spa and sauna. Detox is in many ways both a mental and a physical activity that improves overall wellness and increases resistance to disease and age. Your body will thank you for it.
