Having a toothache can be quite an unpleasant experience, and the best course of action would be to see an emergency dentist in severe cases. However, we may not always be nearby one, or we may simply not have the time. Fortunately, there are natural ways to ease a toothache. Here is how you can start to relieve the pain.

Saltwater Rinse

If a dentist is not a feasible option for you, then one tried and true method for you would be to swish around some warm, salty water in your mouth. About half a teaspoon of salt to every 8 ounces of water would do the trick. Be advised that you should be spitting it out and not swallowing it. The saltwater mix will be able to help fight inflammation or swelling that may have infiltrated your mouth via bacteria. You should also take the opportunity to floss out some residual food to not give bacteria any more opportunity to grow.

Ice

It is believed that ice can stop pain signals to your brain, which means that this can be used as an effective alternative form of treatment for a toothache. Take some ice, put it in your hand and on the same side of the body as your sore tooth. Then, rub the ice between the space between your thumb and forefinger for approximately 7 minutes or until you feel the area start to grow numb.

Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint tea bags are a popular way of numbing pain and soothing gums that are sensitive. Take a used tea bag and let it cool down before applying it to the area that is hurting. It should still be slightly warm at the point. You can either make it warm, or you can freeze the tea bag and then apply it to the tooth. Peppermint oil has been linked to killing bacteria that can reside in your mouth, which may be the source of pain.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains pain-numbing alcohol. With the antioxidants inside, it makes it ideal for healing. Simply apply a small amount of extract onto a cotton ball your finger and apply it directly to the tooth a few times a day.

As you can see, there are a variety of alternative methods for dealing with bothersome toothaches. The next time you aren't able to see a dentist, try one of these methods.
