Dental Disease: What It Takes to Prevent Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is often a silent disease. Sometimes, there aren't any symptoms until the cancer has spread through the mouth, requiring surgery or other forms of treatment to get rid of the disease. There are a few things that you can do to prevent oral cancer from forming or to keep it from spreading. One of the most important things to do is to seek medical treatment if you see anything abnormal in the mouth.

Pay Attention

When you brush your teeth, pay attention to what the mouth looks like. Oral cancer usually starts as small lumps that grow on the sides of the tongue or on the cheeks. There isn't a lot of pain associated with oral cancer, which is sometimes why it's hard to detect in the early stages. If there are any abnormal lumps in the mouth, point them out to your dentist so that they can be examined.

Stop Using Tobacco

If you smoke or use tobacco in any other way, you need to stop as soon as you can. Although tobacco isn't the only cause of oral cancer, those who do use the product are at a higher risk of developing the disease. When you make the decision to stop using tobacco, there are forms of nicotine that you can get if you crave the drug, such as patches or gum.

Get Tested

Most dentists will automatically do a simple examination of your mouth to see if there are any issues and might be able to determine whether or not oral cancer is present. A dentist, such as those at Family 1st Dental, will most likely perform such an exam each time you visit the office. If there are any concerns, the dentist will usually want to do thorough testing or even a biopsy to determine if cancer is present. It's important to follow the recommendations of the dentist because your health is his main concern. You can also request tests if you suspect that something abnormal is present in the mouth.

Eat Healthy

The foods that you eat can sometimes decrease your risk of developing cancer. Eat foods that are high in vitamins and nutrients, especially fruits and vegetables. Green vegetables should be at the top of your list of foods to eat as they have higher levels of antioxidants that can reduce the risk of cancer in the mouth and other areas of the body.

Although your mouth is small, it can be a home for one of the most dangerous cancers. Oral cancer can be detected if you visit the dentist on a regular basis and have thorough examinations. Pay attention to your teeth, gums, tongue and other areas to note any changes that you see.
