Expecting? 3 Tips For Staying Healthy While Working

Most women work for a significant amount of time during their pregnancies. You might very well be one of them someday, or even already are. If that’s the case, you will need to be extra careful in order to properly see to both your health needs and the needs of your baby. The three tips outlined below will help you stay healthy while pregnant and working.

Follow Your Doctor’s Advice

Quite possibly the best thing you can do to keep yourself and your child healthy while working is to keep up with your prenatal checkups and follow the advice your doctor and other medical professionals give you. No one is going to know more about your specific situation and be a better source of professional advice than someone who knows your medical history. If your doctor believes you should not be performing the type of job you do while pregnant, then you are going to have to look into your options.

Maintain A Healthy Pregnancy Diet

While you may be tempted to want something fast during the workday so you can save time, pregnancy is not a time to be skirting healthy eating habits. Bringing your own lunch to work and keeping healthy snacks at your desk are good solutions. If you do go out with co-workers or for business lunches, choose healthier, well-balanced options and avoid lots of salty, sweet or fatty foods. Balance in your diet is key, with plenty of fruits, vegetables and milk products, and be sure to eat a little more than you normally might—three to five meals a day is recommended for a working pregnant woman. Don’t forget to keep yourself well hydrated.

Manage The Stress

Too much stress is bad for you, and even worse for your baby. Unfortunately, work can be extremely stressful, so you will have to be particularly careful about your stress levels. One way to keep stress under control is to know your rights as an expecting mother in the workplace. Several state and federal laws are in place to protect pregnant working women—for example, Title IX requires that all employees of educational institutions that receive federal funding are not discriminated upon based on their sex. If you have questions, you may consider consulting with a lawyer experienced with Title IX cases.

There is a lot to keep in mind while pregnant, and even more if you are working. Probably the best advice is simply to go about your day as you would normally, while making the small changes here and there that are necessary for the health of both you and your baby. Stressing out about doing the right thing all the time isn’t going to help and will be detrimental to your health. Make the right choices, and you can continue to do a good job at work while maintaining your health.
