Having the flu can do more than just ruin your day. It can cause you to lose sleep at night and then have to struggle through the following day while feeling groggy. Although there are plenty of medications that are available at the local pharmacy, there are also plenty of all-natural remedies that can also be effective and help to speed up the healing process. These natural remedies are sometimes hundreds of years old and so have been tried and tested through a number of generations. Choose these methods to prevent or get over the flu, especially if you want to avoid taking too many different prescription medicines.

Prevention is an important aspect of fighting flu, so we should be extra cautious at times of outbreaks leading to an epidemic or otherwise. Infants should be injected with rotavirus vaccinations after consulting a proper pediatrician. In our day-to-day life as well, we should keep hygiene and have proper civic sense. Washing hands thoroughly from time to time, eating at reputed food joints and drinking pure and safe filtered water. These simple measures can go a long way in keeping us healthy and prevent us from falling victims to complex health issues.

Flu-Fighting Foods

Garlic

Garlic has great germ fighting abilities and is a credible way for curing the flu. Try to include a lot of garlic in your meals when you are suffering from the flu. It will make the flu feel better and possibly even help you to heal faster.

Menthol Ointment

Use a menthol ointment over the chest, throat and back. Many believe the vapors from the ointment will help in healing the flu. A nurse with an online master in nursing degree advises against using this remedy for children below two years of age, however, as the menthol can irritate the tender skin beneath the nose.

Chicken Soup

Chicken soup helps in curing the flu in more than one way—simply by inhaling the steam from the soup, you can clear out your nasal passages. Slowly sipping a cup of chicken soup can be a good way to fend off dehydration. Chicken soup also has certain anti-inflammatory properties. Drink a lot of water and eat plenty of chicken soup, as it is a delicious way of killing time while you are waiting to get over the flu. Plus, it is said to be good for the soul!

Hot Tea

Hot tea (decaffeinated) has some of the same benefits as chicken soup. It can help to clear your congestion and keep you hydrated. Drinking hot tea can also help to soothe your throat. You could also try some green or black tea, as it happens to be loaded with disease fighting antioxidants.

Hot Toddy

The Hot Toddy is a cold remedy that has been used frequently over the years. The recipe for this concoction is realy quite simple. Just make a cup of herbal tea like you normally would and then add a tablespoon of honey. Pour in a shot of your favorite whiskey and add a squeeze of lemon. This will help you to sleep more peacefully while at the same time easing your congestion and soothing your throat. You should not have more than one hot toddy as taking in too much alcohol can do damage to your immune system.

Nobody wants to have the flu but it is a fact of life that we just have to live with from time to time. Make sure that you take all of the precautions listed above and if you do happen to get the flu, just take it easy, have some garlic, eat some chicken soup and wait it out. Also, remember to get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated at all times!
