Exercise, meditation, and travel can all rejuvenate us, but sometimes we don’t have time in our busy lives to make room for our health. However, there are some simple ways you can refresh yourself, especially if you have a job or living situation that requires you to stay indoors. You can step outside, and get a breath of fresh air and some needed sunlight. After spending time outside, you may notice that you feel better than you have in a long time. While fresh air and exercise are always beneficial, you should also know that the sun plays a role in stimulating your body to feel new and refreshed. Sunlight helps to promote a positive sense of wellbeing by offering many benefits for your health. Here are some ways that getting sunlight can keep you happier and healthier.

Increase Vitamin D Production

Your body needs sunlight to produce vitamin D. While it is important to protect yourself from UV radiation with sunscreen, many people in their attempts to avoid sun exposure can experience a deficiency from vitamin D. You might be deficient in vitamin D if you experience fatigue, foggy thinking or a general lack of happiness. There’s a reason why seasonal depression exists! Losing vitamin D can leave us feeling listless and unhappy. For most people, it only takes about 15 minutes of sunlight each day to help the body to produce this essential vitamin for better wellbeing. So get out into the sun for a bit! Wear light sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to avoid sunburn in hot areas, but even just being in the shade can help your body get that glow it needs to revitalize its style.

Promote a Sense of Relaxation

The heat from the sun helps to relax your muscles, which is why so many people enjoy sunbathing and afternoon naps. If you’re in a place where it’s cloudy for much of the year or where you can’t really spend much time outside, there are infrared saunas that can provide many of the same benefits of relaxation. In addition to easing the tension in your shoulders, neck and back, the warmth and light from the sun helps you to let go of your worries. You’ll find that the relaxation you feel after soaking up the warmth carries through the rest of your day and leaves you with a sense of peace. So if you’re feeling stressed, try to get a little sunlight in your life.

Detoxify Your Body

Your body is bombarded with toxins that are everywhere in your environment. From chemicals that are in the food that you eat to the air that you breathe, it is almost impossible to escape taking in some type of toxin during your everyday activities. Living an overall healthy lifestyle helps to reduce the toxins that you are exposed to, but you still need to do what you can to help your body clear the waste. Sweating is your body’s way of releasing waste and toxins from your body. In addition to exercise, you can use heat to help push your body’s ability to clear waste products along. Sunlight helps us get moving and cleanse ourselves. Getting just 20 minutes of sunlight each day has been shown to help humans produce healthy antimicrobials that kill off bad bacteria and other unhealthy parasites.

Alleviate Seasonal Depression

Many people suffer from prolonged feelings of sadness that occur during certain times of the year. As mentioned above, this can be at least partially due to lack of vitamin D. Some other causes of seasonal depression can be the holidays, which are a source of stress and occasionally a reminder of lost loved ones or strained family relations. Seasonal depression is, unfortunately, very real, and becomes more intense as the light wanes. Fortunately, it has been found that exposure to sunlight helps to lift people’s moods. If you live in an area that is cloudy or rainy for periods of time during certain seasons, then you can also use artificial sources of light to help you banish bad moods. But if there is a break in the clouds, go and soak it up. You’ll find yourself feeling happier and healthier, which will boost both your mental state and physical appearance.

When your physical or mental health needs a boost, you need to look no further than toward the sun. Spending some time in the warm glow of natural light helps you to detoxify your body and get away from the stresses that you deal with in the world. If you can’t get enough sun, artificial sources and saunas can be helpful in giving you that lift that you so desperately need. While it only takes a few minutes to achieve these effects, you can expect the benefits to last long and expand into every aspect of your life.
