People regularly go to see their doctors and dentists, and occasionally go to see a specialist if something unusual is going on. However, there are more areas of the medical field than most people can imagine, and therefore it stands to reason that there are plenty of medical specialists most people will never have to see in their lifetimes. You may not even know about some of these fields.
Leprologists
As it is not a remotely common condition anymore, leprologists, or doctors who specialize in the study and treatment of leprosy, are never going to be used by most people. Yet this specialization of medical science is very important to the handful of people who are diagnosed with leprosy every year in the US (roughly around 200). There are more cases around the globe, usually a couple hundred thousand a year, and mostly in developing countries. So it isn’t a dead disease yet, but you are very unlikely to come down with it.
Rare and Complex Disability Care
Most people will not need disability care at all throughout most of their lives, and even fewer need to concern themselves with rare and complex disability care. However, for individuals with rare or complex mental or physical disabilities, there are specialists to help, and even facilities like The Center For Discovery that specialize in providing services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other special needs. Many complex disabilities, such as autism, are simply something someone is born with, and the severity of the condition differs from person to person.
Parasitologists
Parasitologists work in the area of the medical field that studies parasites, their effect on human health, and their treatment. It’s a specialization most people will never have the need to be in contact with because serious parasitic infections are relatively rare in the Western world. However, parasitologists have their work cut out for them in the battle against malaria, which is a disease caused by four species of protozoan parasites that can infect humans. Common ectoparasites you might come down within your lifetime include ticks, scabies, and lice, but you likely won’t have to see a specialist for such common conditions.
Most people will never have to receive care from specialists in the above-mentioned areas of the medical field. However, when they are needed, they are critical for the well-being and survival of many people. And if you ever do come down with an exotic parasite after a trip abroad, you’ll know where to turn.
