How to Prevent Your Desk Job from Killing You

You finally nailed that dream job in the luxury office with a sweet view. The executive chair, the extra-large monitor, and a massive desk with plenty of space are the envy of everyone in the office. However, little do you know that the job of your dreams can kill you over time if you develop poor habits at work. Here are some simple ways to promote healthy habits at your desk job.

Ditch the Chair
Think about how much of our lives we spend sitting down. We sit in our cars and drive them everywhere we need to go. We sit in front of our televisions for hours at a time every day. However, a large chunk of sitting down takes occurs at the workplace. Research continues to demonstrate that sitting is horrible for your health. A quality standing desk improves posture, burns a lot of extra calories, and strengthens your muscles. You will be surprised that standing will improve lower back pain and prevent trips to the chiropractor. Set small goals to increase the amount you stand at work each day.

Smart Snacking
Avoid the temptation to make that trip to the vending machine. Pack some healthy snacks in your lunch bag, and say no to the coworker who brings you a cupcake. Carrots with hummus, almonds, and fresh veggies with yogurt dip are some great options. Listen to your body and snack only when you genuinely need an energy boost.

Get Up and Move!
Human beings are designed to move, period. We have two legs and two feet for a reason. Experts say that you should take a movement break every 30 minutes during work. Set calendar invites on your email to remind you to get up and move. You can find an extra three to five minutes to move periodically throughout the day. Before long, you will create an excellent habit that stays with you for the long run!

Take the Stairs
There is no elevator to good health, so you are going to have to take the stairs. A flight or two of steps promotes healthier workplace habits. It is especially advantageous to use stairs on days when going to the gym isn’t a possibility. You will burn calories and strengthen your muscles.

We spend a large portion of our lives at work. Unhealthy work behaviors can quickly snowball into poor health and even early death. Get proactive and develop an action plan to create a flourishing work environment.
