Don't Gum Up Your Oral Health: 4 Mistakes to Avoid When Brushing Your Teeth

Oral care has been a part of everyone’s routine since childhood. However, brushing since childhood doesn’t mean the oral care routine is correct. Most of the time, patients learn improper techniques only to learn about true oral care routines during a trip to the dentist. Learn dentists’ secrets now.

Ignoring Brushing Power

Bent or frayed toothbrushes are signs of brushing too hard. While it’s noble to emphasize plaque and discoloration reduction, brushing harder doesn’t clean teeth any better. Consequently, the overzealous brushing approach causes more damage than intended. The teeth’s enamel erodes. The gums recede due to the rough brushing, exposing the tooth’s root. An exposed root bears no protection, so there’s a risk for tooth sensitivity and cavities. Gums are in pain over hard brushing. Give teeth a gentle brushing. If you can’t help from brushing too hard, get an angled handle toothbrush.

Ignoring Bristle Firmness

A manual toothbrush comes in soft, medium, and firm. Dentists recommend soft toothbrush bristles. Soft bristles clean the teeth and gums of discoloration and plaque while being gentle. Medium and firm toothbrush bristles are too harsh for teeth and gums, weakening tooth enamel. Extra soft and ultra-soft toothbrush bristles are equally acceptable.

Ignoring Brushing Techniques

There is a method to brushing teeth. Straight-across brushing is not it. For manual toothbrushes, brush at a 45-degree angle upward and a 45-degree angle downward. This brushes the teeth and the gum line. Additionally, brush your teeth in a circular motion. Do this procedure on the outside, the inside, and the chewing surface. Do this procedure on the top and bottom rows of teeth. Electric toothbrushes are exempt from this rule because the product cleans deep by default.

Ignoring Flossing Altogether

Oral care without flossing is incomplete dental care. Flossing cleans the plaque toothbrushes can’t reach. This avoids bad breath, avoids gum disease, avoids tooth decay, and avoids chronic inflammation. However, if using dental floss is tedious and cumbersome, there are several options to avoid traditional floss. There are electric floss machines, wooden dental sticks, and bristle dental picks. If bleeding occurs during flossing, keep going. The gums are informing you that flossing is desperately necessary. With continued flossing, the bleeding will stop.

Immaculate oral care is critical. The world depends on teeth to chew, to make a good impression, and to boost self-esteem. Keep those teeth strong, healthy, and white with preventative dental care. A dentist will examine the teeth for problems and provide reasonable solutions for the smile we deserve.
