Indian head massages can be wonderfully relaxing and help increase optimal health on multiple levels. There are many qualified and talented massage therapists who specialize in Indian head massage but there are simple techniques you can do yourself and be successful in seeing results.
Very few things are needed to begin giving someone an Indian head massage. You will need a chair, a volunteer and a quiet space. To enhance the atmosphere you can light candles, burn incense and or play soothing music.
Before bringing the massage session you need to make sure your volunteer feels comfortable to make you aware at anytime during the session if he/she is feeling pain or very uncomfortable.
Have your volunteer sit down and relax. To encourage relaxation gently place your hands upon the shoulders of the volunteer and together breath deeply. Continue this until you feel your volunteer is calm and ready to enter a deeper state of relaxation.
After the deep breathing begin a massage of the shoulders. Begin the shoulder massage by gently squeezing the top of the shoulders. Begin closest to the neck and with each squeeze move to the outer edges of the shoulder; repeat this several times. Next, move to the upper spine. Make circular motions with the thumbs on both sides of the vertebrae moving upwards towards the hair line; repeat this several times.
Move into a massage of the neck. As each stage of the massage progresses you should sense your volunteer releasing more and more tension. With one hand placed around the back of the neck fingers and thumb spread apply light pressure and glide upwards to underneath the ears. To help with stabilization of the head place the opposite hand on the forehead. If the neck seems to be holding lots of muscular tension add a circular motion to the massage and this will help reduce the unwanted pressure.
With one hand placed on the forehead and the other placed on the neck rock the head backwards and forwards several times. Make sure you do not over extend the neck just use the range of motion of the neck.
At this point loosen the hair is it is not already down and free. With the hair loose drive the fingers through the hair in a shampooing motion. Rotate in circular motions with moving up towards the top of the head. Pull the hands upward keeping traction with the hair and then release. Repeat this multiple times each time entering the head from a different angle.
Again use one hand to stabilize the head by holding the forehead and use the base of the othe hands palm to brush the scalp of the head. Brush all over the head for 30 seconds and then switch hands and repeat. Then with your fingertips lightly comb the hair all over the head in a tossing manner, do this for a minute or more.
Finnish by stroking the hair, beginning at the crown and stroking downwards allow each stroke to get slower and slower until finally you leave the hair.
This is a basic example of how to do an Indian Head Massage, give it a try and enjoy the benefits!
