Do you find your mind wandering as you are at work typing an email to a college, or when you are writing an essay for a class or when you are cleaning your home? How many hours of your day is spent thinking about doing something else or another situation? A new research study examines the level of happiness of a large number of people and what activities bring people the most joy and the type of attitude mind wandering creates.
JournalScience published the results of this study that was conducted by researchers from Harvard University. The study used 2,250 people between the ages of 18 and 80 years of age. They randomly asked the participants what activity they were engaged in, the level of their happiness and whether or not they were focused of distracted at the time. The study revealed that most people spend over 40% of their time allowing their mind to wander; that is a dramatic amount of our day. Also, the results showed that when the mind wanders the level of an individual's happiness lowers, in fact the most unhappy moments of the day were when the individual's mind was wondering.
The research suggests that people are most happy when they are in the moment, invested in the activity that they are participating in. The activities that brought the participants the most happiness were love making, exercising and having enjoyable conversation.
The study suggests that mind wandering is a great way to gauge someone's happiness. If you are finding that you spend most of your time allowing your mind to wander, being only half invested in your daily activities you may want to reconsider why you are doing the things that you are doing. Improve your relationships, make new relationships, engage in social activities, try and focus on the moment and make your mind wanderings into a reality.
