Diet is half the battle to lose weight

A large percentage of today's western population is concerned about losing weight. There are many variables that contribute to weight loss. Diet plays a large part in consistent and permanent weight loss. What you eat is half the battle to losing weight. There are several actions that can be taken that will help navigate successful weight loss through diet.

Eat smaller portions. An easy way to eat smaller portions is by using smaller plates. By using smaller plates the mind does not feel deprived as the plate doesn't look empty rather it looks full, this helps the mind feel full and satisfied. When eating out share a meal with a spouse or friend. Most restaurant meals are dramatically larger than the suggested portion size by sharing a meal or saving half as leftovers will avoid overeating.

Assign "eating time". Be present when eating. Try to avoid eating on the go, in the car or eating while doing other tasks. If the mind is alert and focused on eating it will appreciate the food and acknowledge the food consumed. Grazing can be dangerous because it is a habit not a need and when food is consumed while the mind is focused on other things the amount of food is neglected and unappreciated, encouraging overeating.

Avoid eating for the sake of a social activity. Today's society tends to formulate traditions around food. Food traditions can offer many fun memories but make sure all traditions and social activities are not focused on food. This is the start of connecting emotional behaviors with food.

Drink water. Often people eat when they think they are hungry but actually they are dehydrated. Keep a bottle or glass of water around at all times and make it a top priority to stay hydrated.

Take time to count calories. Some people make this a life long habit and other people hate it but it is a valuable activity. Many people over eat because they have no concept of how unhealthy or the high volume of calories their food pertains. Take the time to become educated in the type of foods that are consumed.
